Poplar Head Legend

This legend tells of travelers in the 1800’s stopping in the same area to water their livestock at a spring surrounded by poplar trees and tall pines.  They began cutting some of the trees and during the 1840’s pine log cabins were built around the spring.

People began moving in and the settlement became known as Poplar Head. By 1858 there were nine families living in the same area where the old Indian chief had his vision.

This copper penny was in regular use in South Alabama during this time.
