James Leonard Acree
Famed Pony Express Rider and
Dothan Mayor

In 1902-03, during the term of Mayor J. L. Acree, Dothan made many valuable improvements.  Dothan added a sewer system.  Built the Grammar School(Howell School).  

Dothan owned and operated its own electric light plant and its water works, consisting of two artesian wells that flowing 550 gallons per minute. 

Dothan was the largest inland shipping point for naval stores in the world.  The city had an ice plant, two cotton gins, steam laundry, guano factory and was the county seat for Houston County, February 9, 1903.
