July 12, 1927, forty Boy Scouts from Dothan attend Camp Cheerful located on Bear Creek in Bay County Florida.
Attending the camp were:
Troop # 2 – Duggie Bailey, Billy Bailey, Joe Lee Jessup, James Strickland, Percy Hopkins, Ed Linch, Robert Hall, J. B. Murray, Murrel Burket.
Troop #3 – Harold Baker, Benton Foy, Jack Coleman, Howell Bennett, W. F. Martin, Jr., Yale Lewis, Clyde Tindell, Amos Tindell.
Troop #4 – Allen McCall, Jack Payne, Joseph Hilson, Porter Grant, Frank Moss Gaines, Jr., Reginald Walker, Robert Cox.
Troop #5 - William Wheatley, William Espy.
Troop #6 – Howard Grimes, Robert Parker Brown, Arthur Powell, Saunders Parrish, Edward Lenkett.
Troop #7 – Mark Merritt, Paul Kornegay, Randolph Gilbert, Glenn Newton, Grant Newberry and Walter Brown, mascot.
The Bay Line RR offered a special rate of $1 each way to Bayou George, where the camp furnished transportation to Camp Cheerful for the two week event.
W. L. Sprouse, Scout Executive from Dothan served as camp director.
One of the big features at the camp was the presence of Chief Templeton, famous Indian fighter. Chief Templeton from Muskogee, OK was formerly connected with William Cody, “Buffalo Bill”. He gave instruction in Woodcraft, Indian lore and other matters of interest to the boys.
